About This Pub
Ah, The Gunner – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a reliable old mate in North Shields, with its warm lighting and traditional charm making it a go-to for a relaxed pint or a bite to eat. I've got to say, the deals are an absolute highlight; you're talking about cracking value like two mains for a song, which makes it ideal for families or anyone watching the pennies. The atmosphere really comes alive during big sports events, with friendly staff keeping things lively and ensuring glasses are topped up promptly – it's a safe spot where you can enjoy the game without any fuss. On the flip side, though, there have been a few grumbles about service not always hitting the mark, like when someone had a bad experience with overly spicy food for the kids and didn't get much help sorting it out. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for a good night out, as long as you keep expectations realistic and maybe check the menu in advance for the little ones. If you're in the area, I'd pop in for a try – it's got that genuine pub spirit that's hard to beat.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
It's got brilliant value for money with all sorts of deals, like two mains for just over a tenner, which is a real winner for a casual night out.
-
A fantastic spot for watching live sports, with big screens showing the likes of Newcastle United and England games, creating a buzzing atmosphere.
-
The pub has a warm, traditional vibe that's family-friendly, complete with a beer garden and other nice touches like WiFi and dog-friendly policies.
-
They serve up solid pub grub and drinks, and it's praised for being a safe, relaxed space where you can pop in on your own without a worry.
Cons
-
Service can sometimes fall short, like when there's an issue with food – one person mentioned getting the huff for returning spicy nachos that weren't suitable for a little one, without any offer of a refund.
-
There might be occasional slip-ups with food choices, especially if you're dining with kids and need milder options.
-
While it's generally affordable, the overall experience could be hit or miss on busier days, potentially leaving you waiting a bit longer than you'd like.

Service is absolutely disgusting! Order nachos to share with a 5 year old, they gave us spice tortilla chips which was obviously too spicy for a 5 year old. Got dirty looked and huffed at for taking food order back to bar. Was not offered a refund.
Great service from all the staff. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Empty glasses cleared promptly from tables. I feel confident to go in alone as a woman, safe space. Thank you
Still fantastic value!! 2 mains for £ 10.49... seniors lunch 2 courses for £4.99...
Frienfly staff, a warm welcome and big sports screens. A regular for our family.
Good food at an amazing price. The service is excellent. A great place to watch sports, especially the Newcastle United and England football games. Great atmosphere.
Christmas dinner 2023, food absolutely amazing and plentiful! Felt really relaxed and comfortable! Not rushed in any way, staff checked we were ready for the next course each time. Unbelievable value for money at 43 per head for three beautiful courses! Could not have been happier! Staff are so friendly and absolutely lovely!
