About This Pub

Ah, The Groundworks – it's one of those places that just feels like a hidden gem in Hitchin, you know? I had a wander in the other day, and I have to say, the food really stole the show; their seasonal menus are packed with global inspirations, like homemade chilli crisp and labneh, and classics done just right. The coffee's a winner too, coming from Allpress, so it's not only tasty but also supports fair practices. The team there are usually dead helpful, especially if you're sorting out dietary stuff, which is a nice touch. But, let's be honest, it can turn into a bit of a scrum when it's busy, and I've heard a few tales of service not being as attentive as it could be, maybe because they're chatting away or dealing with the rush. Still, with all those glowing reviews, it's worth popping by for a proper brunch – just maybe go early to snag a spot and keep an eye on your budget!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious, with seasonal menus full of unique twists on classics like smashed avocado and eggs benedict – it's all cooked to perfection and presented beautifully.
  • They serve fantastic coffee from Allpress, which is fair trade and top quality, making it a great spot for a proper brew.
  • The staff are generally friendly and knowledgeable, especially when it comes to handling allergens, which makes it welcoming for everyone.
  • It's a cosy, bustling cafe in the heart of Hitchin, creating a lively atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed brunch.
  • With a solid 4.5 rating from loads of reviews, it's clear this place knows how to deliver a memorable experience overall.
Cons
  • It can get really busy, so you might end up waiting or struggling to find a seat, especially during peak times.
  • Service isn't always spot on – there have been times when staff seemed a bit distracted, which can slow things down.
  • Prices are on the steeper side, so it might feel a tad pricey for what you get, even if the quality is high.

The food was amazing as usual, it always is! However on this occasion the staff attentiveness was really low. An ‘off duty’ or on a break staff member was stood to the side of the till drinking a coffee and chatting to all the team working. Distracting them all from serving. I get the social, chilled & fun work environment I really do - it adds to the atmosphere of the place. Just pay attention to the customers, I shouldn’t have to wait an age and then finally have to ask someone to take my order. Will be back but will make sure I know what I want and order when seated rather than waiting!

Really nice cafe. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about allergens. Had a lovely gluten free groundwork’s breakfast with the sausage (gluten containing) substituted for extra bacon.

Cosy, bustling cafe in the centre of Hitchin. It's often quite busy and there may not be seats-- it is clearly very popular. The menu had interesting unique dishes as well as brunch classics. The coffee was decent -- they stock Allpress coffees and have a guest coffee on, too. Service was timely and the food was really good. My partner had the avocado toast and I had poached pear French toast. I did enjoy my food but the pears were barely poached- they were still quite tough. Additionally the sauce that came with the avocado toast was a bit excessive. Otherwise it was really good food, though. Would definitely come again. Nice spot.

Lovely experience going here for coffee and brunch. Service was fantastic. Food was excellent and coffee was delicious. While slightly on the expensive side, the quality is high and I think I’ve convinced myself it was worth it. They also handled an allergy without issue and with confidence which was great. Get the grilled cheese and some hash browns! I’d love to have more rosemary salt on the hash browns and much more kick to the chilli mayo and the jam however. Otherwise a perfect experience (and dog friendly to boot)!
