About This Pub
Ah, The Grey Horse – what a gem it is! I've got to say, chatting about this place feels like recommending a mate's local haunt. The beers are where it really shines; they're brewing their own award-winners right there, and from what folks are saying, they're spot on – think rich, flavoursome ales that keep you coming back. The staff are dead friendly and fun, adding to that proper community buzz with events like quizzes and beer festivals that make it feel alive and engaging. Plus, it's easy on the wallet, which is always a win when you're out for a few. On the flip side, if you're peckish for more than a quick toastie or whatever the food van's dishing up on Thursdays, you might find it a bit lacking – it's not the spot for a full-blown meal, so plan ahead if that's your thing. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone after a traditional pub experience with great drinks and a welcoming feel, but just keep expectations realistic on the food front. I'd definitely swing by if you're in the area; it's got that heartwarming charm that makes a night out memorable.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with their own award-winning brews like Steel Town Ale and Ole Rosy that even fussy drinkers rave about.
-
It's got that real community feel, with friendly staff, fun events like beer fests and quiz nights, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to pop in regularly.
-
Prices are brilliant – way more affordable than other pubs around, so you can enjoy a pint without breaking the bank.
-
They're dog-friendly, which is perfect if you're out for a walk and fancy a stop-off.
-
The toasties are a cut above the rest, and the Thursday food vans add a nice touch for something a bit extra.
Cons
-
Food options are pretty limited – it's mostly just toasties and the occasional food van, so if you're after a proper meal, you might need to look elsewhere.
-
It doesn't serve full meals, which could be a downside if you're hoping for a sit-down dinner with your drinks.

I haven't rated the food because this is a traditional pub that doesn't do meals. However, the toasties are class. They also have food vans every Thursday night, which are fab. The pub itself is absolutely first class. They brew their own 🍺, I'm a fussy drinker, but I love the steel town ale. They brew several different award winning real ales. The atmosphere is great, the bar staff are super friendly and to top it all off they are dog friendly. Love the place 🙌
Nice local pub with community feel. Great selection or craft and traditional beers on tap including beers they brew them selves. Quality of own brewery beers is very good.
Price is amazing at about 50% of durham pub prices.
If I lived closer I'd be there every day!
Great little real ale boozer with very friendly and fun staff and a super selection of their own brewed ales and good guest ales. I'm marking food mid simply because it's a small selection of toasties, and whilst they're fine, it's not a good selection overall. The pub is very dog friendly. Still the best pub in the North East.
First time ever in this pub. A traditional pub with a lot of character. Bar staff, polite and efficient. A very good choice of real ales. Did not eat, but the prices for the dishes are very reasonable. Loads of history to read from the memorabilia on the walls. Well worth the visit.
Great little pub. Friendly, busy comfy and great atmosphere. Have loads of things on during the year. Beer fest, quiz nights and a beer belly race for charity. They brew their own beer too. Ole rosy is rather popular, unfortunately I'm not a beer drinker so can't comment.
