About This Pub

Ah, The Company Row – it's one of those classic Wetherspoon spots that you can rely on for a good, affordable pint or a hearty meal without fuss. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks really appreciate the bang for their buck; you can pop in early for a coffee and watch the world go by, or settle in for some all-day breakfast that hits the spot. The vibe is pretty relaxed and inclusive, with a mix of people from all walks of life, which makes it feel like a proper local haunt. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – I've heard a few tales of staff who seem a bit off their game, maybe not as cheerful as you'd hope, and there are stories of food orders going awry, like getting the wrong dish or finding things not quite up to scratch. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.1, it's clear that most people have a good time here, so if you're heading out for a casual catch-up, it's worth giving it a go, just keep your expectations realistic and maybe double-check that order when it arrives.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a fantastic spot for great value on food and drinks – you get a proper meal without breaking the bank, just like you'd expect from a Wetherspoon.
  • The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, with a mix of all ages making it feel like a real community hub.
  • They've got super generous opening hours, starting early in the morning, which is perfect if you're after a coffee or breakfast before the day kicks off.
Cons
  • Some staff can come across as a bit miserable or unenthusiastic, which puts a damper on things even if the rest is spot on.
  • Food quality can be hit or miss; there have been complaints about wrong orders or meals that don't quite live up to expectations, like missing ingredients.
  • Cleanliness isn't always top-notch, with tables sometimes left messy for a while, which might make you wait a bit longer than you'd like.

I was in Consett, unusually, at 8 a.m. on a Bank Holiday Monday, waiting for a shop to open. I saw the lights in Spoons and ventured in. Not my usual place. I ordered a coffee from the lovely girl behind the bar then watched how the machine worked and loaded up. A table by the window brought forth all that Consett offered. As I sat and surfed, the place gradually filled up. Old timers such as me, travelling tradies fueling up before their work, Airbnbers and regulars. All quiet and peaceful. Most with breakfast and a cuppa, only one or with a livener. Don't worry I've known that need. I had a fried breakfast and more coffee. What a nice atmosphere. Everyone at peace with the world. I live too far away to be a regular but as a single fella, and at the price, I'll be calling in at 8 for a breakfast again.

The Wetherspoon experience you come to expect. Top value for money on food and drink, with very generous opening hours and courteous staff.

The worst. I ordered a vegetarian dinner, i got a meat dinner plonked in my table. Sent it back and they brought back the same plate but they exchanged the 3 meat sausages with 1 cold vegetarian sauage(i paid for 3), and the bacon had been removed from the plate. It was clearly the same beans and chips that were on the meat version i sent back. I just thought forget it as i could not be bothered to wait any longer and i did not trust what they were putting on the plate. I will not be going back, a total waste of money.

It's really gone downhill. The food was crap, ok it's spoons I'm not expecting gourmet, but the food quality has dropped, had a pizza with no tomato. Had a table full of glasses and dirty awaiting to be tidied and collected for a prolonged period of time, we had to actually shout of a lad to come clear it. It's reached it's capacity also, not big enough. Bad experience. Overall the food quality has dropped and the staff quality certainly has. It used to be a good spoons when Rob worked there.
