About This Pub

Ah, The Cask Lounge – it's one of those spots that really warms your heart on a good visit. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this inviting, homely feel with comfy seating and a stylish interior that makes you want to linger. The beer garden is a real gem, especially with that outdoor heating to keep things pleasant even as the evening cools down. Folks rave about the real ales and the relaxed atmosphere, whether you're popping in for a quiet pint alone or catching up with mates – it's got that safe, welcoming energy. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect; a couple of reviews mentioned feeling shoved aside, like being seated in a corridor, which sounds a bit off-putting and makes you wonder if they're short on space sometimes. Then there's the service – mostly friendly and attentive, but one or two experiences were less than stellar, with staff not being as helpful or smiley as you'd hope. Overall, with a solid 4.8 rating, it's clear this place does a lot right, but if you're heading over, maybe go in with an open mind and keep an eye on those little niggles. It's a lovely addition to South Shields, and I'd say it's worth a try for a relaxed night out, just as long as you're prepared for the odd hiccup.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely cosy and welcoming, making it feel like you're relaxing in your own lounge – perfect for a chilled evening with friends.
  • They've got a lovely beer garden with outdoor heating, so you can enjoy a drink outside even if it gets a bit nippy.
  • The interior is stylish and comfortable, with comfy seating and even some beautiful art on the walls that adds a nice touch.
  • Great selection of drinks, especially for real ale enthusiasts, and it's often praised for being a relaxing spot whether you're on your own or with mates.
Cons
  • Service can be hit or miss; some folks have mentioned feeling a bit unwelcoming from the staff, like on a bad day.
  • There have been complaints about seating arrangements, such as being stuck in a corridor, which might make you feel a tad overlooked.
  • A few reviews point out that the choice of ales isn't always top-notch, and it might not feel like the best value for your money.
  • It's a shame, but it seems like the experience isn't consistent, with some visits leaving a sour taste.

First time here, and it was lovey. Very cosy place to have a drink. We sat in the beer garden as it was still sunny. It was very pleasant and not busy. They have outdoor heating if it gets a bit chilly. Inside it is a lovely atmosphere and comfy seating. What a lovely place all round. Would recommend booking a table if you want to guarantee a seat inside.

have to reserve seating, went in bar was seated in corridor, showed to corridor to drink pint. shoved in a corner, in the corridor, as if not wanted in pub. choice of ales, not very good, poor quality. not good value for money, I would advise no one to go to this bar, as it is atrocious, the staff attitude, and poor selection of beers/ales.

Nice local pub clean and comfortable with plenty choice of drinks. Not sure if the barmaid was having a bad day though. Didn't feel welcome on our first visit. No smiles and not very helpful about the non alcoholic drinks. Probably won't be back which is a shame.

Visitsd with my Boyfriend and Brother as part of a real ale festival Lovely, smart, stylish and relaxing beautiful art on the walls, eighties background music was subtle. Friendly and attentive staff. Good for a quiet drink on your own or with friends would feel safe on my own. Had a delicious mango flavour real ale. The fires were gorgeous and added to a relaxed atmosphere. Good selection of snacks. Toilets were clean and well maintained. Would highly recommend. Would definitely return.

First time back in South Shields in about 5 years; which is when this bar opened! Casta spotted it in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2023...lovely spot opposite the Town Hall. Outside not so hot in appearance but lovely interior ( like being in your lounge)..two main rooms, a small rear room plus a rear patio. Great real ale bar. Had Thornbridge Brother Rabbit. Very good.
