About This Pub
Ah, the Golden Fleece—it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper slice of York history, doesn't it? Picture this: you're wandering down the Shambles on a crisp evening, and you pop in for a pint in this ancient spot that's been around since 1503. The haunted tales are a real hoot; I love how they add that extra layer of excitement without being over the top. The drinks selection is spot on, with plenty of real ales and a beer garden that's ideal for soaking up the sun, even if it's not massive. Food-wise, they've got some winners like the Sunday roast or that ribeye steak—proper satisfying after a long day. And the staff? They're gems, always cheerful and ready to help, which makes the place feel like a welcoming local hangout. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect; I've heard a few grumbles about waits for food stretching on, and sometimes the portions don't quite live up to the hype, leaving you wanting a bit more. Still, with such a strong overall rating, it's clear the good far outweighs the bad, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone keen on a mix of history, decent eats, and that classic pub vibe in the heart of York.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic and haunted vibe is absolutely brilliant—it's one of York's oldest pubs, dating back to 1503, and the stories of ghosts add a fun, eerie charm that makes every visit memorable.
-
They've got a cracking selection of real ales and traditional drinks, plus a cosy beer garden that's perfect for a sunny afternoon pint, even if it's on the smaller side.
-
The food is generally spot on, with hearty options like Sunday roasts and a lovely ribeye steak; it's just the thing after a day of exploring York.
-
Location-wise, it's bang in the centre, right near the Shambles, making it super convenient for a quick stop or a full evening out.
-
The staff are always friendly and professional, quick to sort out any issues, which really makes you feel welcome and looked after.
Cons
-
Service can be a bit hit or miss at times, like one instance where it took ages for food to arrive, which might put a dampener on your night if you're in a rush.
-
Portions aren't always generous—think skimpy chips or a tiny salad—which could leave you feeling a tad short-changed after waiting around.
-
The beer garden is quite compact, so it might get crowded on busier days, and you could end up without a spot if you're not there early.

Love this creepy pub. We have not had the chance to stay there yet, but would love the opportunity. Good food. Great central location at the bottom of the Shambles.
It took 50 minutes for our ciabattas and chips to arrive. We had around 10 chips each and the smallest salad, which was hardly worth their efforts. After complaining, we were given extra chips. The waiter was lovely and very professional and apologetic, but the experience wasn’t ideal, especially as many people around us received their food before us, although they ordered well after us. It is a nice traditional pub, so maybe go in for a drink, but don’t waste your money on food.
We had a great meal at Golden Fleece on our honeymoon this past weekend. Lovely food & great service! The ribeye steak was beaut!!
Didn’t see any ghosts but loved hearing about them all!!
Great quirky old little pub. Full of character. Apparently ghosts have been seen here!
Beer garden out the back not very big but funky like the pub itself.
Would recommend a visit if in the area.
Especially worth a pop in of say on a pub crawl rather than staying there the day.
Looks a small pub when you approach. Small bar area at the front but a larger area down the corridor to the rear of the premises. Beer garden at the rear also. Usual tap beers and a few real ales available. Staff were friendly and polite. Really great old pub, well worth a visit. Enjoyed my visit.
