About This Pub
Ah, The Archibald Simpson – it's one of those Wetherspoon pubs that just feels like a proper local haunt in the heart of Aberdeen. I have to say, what really stands out is the building itself; it's got this incredible historic vibe with beautiful tiled floors and ceilings that make you pause and appreciate the effort they've put into restoring it. The food's a solid bet too – you get generous portions at prices that are easy on the wallet, like a hearty lasagna or those chips with curry sauce that hit the spot just right. And the drinks? They're reliably good, whether you're after a pint of real ale or something warm to chase away the Scottish chill. On the flip side, though, it's not all perfect; I've heard from a few that service can slow down when the place gets buzzing, which might leave you twiddling your thumbs waiting for that drink. Plus, some dishes aren't quite up to scratch, like the fish coming out a bit greasy, and the atmosphere, while charming, could do with a bit more energy, maybe some tunes or adjusted lighting to really bring it to life. All in all, it's a great spot for a relaxed catch-up with mates, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – it's affordable and atmospheric, but like any pub, it has its off days.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic building is an absolute gem, with stunning tiled floors, ceilings, and chandeliers that make you feel like you're stepping into Aberdeen's past – it's got that real old-school charm.
-
Food offers brilliant value for money; think hearty portions like a massive lasagna or those tasty chips with curry sauce, all at inexpensive prices that won't break the bank.
-
Staff are genuinely polite and helpful, always ready with a smile and quick to assist, which really adds to the welcoming vibe.
-
Drinks are spot on, from well-kept real ale to a comforting hot chocolate on a chilly day – perfect for unwinding after a long one.
Cons
-
Service can drag a bit when it's busy, like waiting half an hour for a drink, which might put a dampener on things if you're in a rush.
-
Some food items fall short, such as the fish batter being a tad too oily, which could leave you wishing for a bit more care in the kitchen.
-
The atmosphere is alright but could use a lift, perhaps with some music or better lighting to enhance that classic historic feel and make it more lively.

Unfortunately had a terrible experience here for breakfast this morning. The pub was fairly busy, but my friends who had been here before when busy said that the service was not as poor as we experienced today. We ordered cooked breakfasts and some drinks. It look half an hour for my pint to arrive, and my friend who ordered a cup of tea still hadn’t received it by the time I left an hour and a quarter later. The food took 75 minutes to arrive, and when it finally arrived I had only 5 minutes to eat before having to go and catch a train. I consulted a member of staff about the wait time, but he was fairly unhelpful and advised me that there was no way he could check on the progress of our orders. This was very disappointing. Furthermore, when the food finally did arrive, the eggs were cold, with solid yolks, and they looked hugely unappetising (see image). Normally I love a spoons breakfast, but regrettably the service on this occasion was simply unacceptable.
I liked the food but the batter of the fish was soaked in oil.
Drinks are amazing.
Service is extremely friendly.
Overall atmosphere was okay, needed a bit of music and perhaps a play on the room lights to add to the classic historic vibe the place is already giving.
Ex Clydesdale Bank designed by the pub it's named after. Amazing tiled floor and ceilings with chandeliers and dark wood and marbled pillars and a huge bar
Atmosphere is very old school. No music TV's on but muted airy Very chilled out. I had a lasagna and chips. The lasagna was a large portion and the chips were okay. The young man behind the bar was being mentored so I had to be patient Food came quick. I asked for a refill of tonic water but was told I had to go to the bar.
Cost £10.90. Just the place to go to chill out
This particular building is amazing. Wetherspoon restored it very well. it has so much character specially love ceiling. The staff are a credit, polite and helpful. The food for the price is value for money and definitely hot chocolate is worth in freezing weather. The real ale is kept well. There gets plenty of people in across all age groups. Plenty of seating and nice atmosphere.
Well work a visit
This place has everything you need for a great night out! The drinks menu is impressive, with plenty of tasty options, but the real star was the chips and curry sauce—absolutely delicious! Perfect mix of flavor and comfort. If you’re looking for good vibes and fantastic pub food, this spot is a must-visit!
