About This Pub
Ah, Sutherlands – it's one of those places that really captures the heart of a good old British pub, tucked away in Gateshead with a bit of a hotel vibe thrown in. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the staff stand out as the real stars; they're friendly, accommodating, and make everyone feel like part of the gang, whether you're there for a quick drink or a full stay. The food's a winner too, with homemade dishes and reasonably priced beers that keep things affordable and enjoyable, especially if you're up for some evening fun like karaoke or discos – it's got that lively buzz that can turn an ordinary night into something memorable. On the flip side, though, there are times when it doesn't quite hit the mark; a few folks have had rough experiences with unsupervised kids causing a ruckus in spots that should be more grown-up, which can make the atmosphere feel a bit chaotic rather than cosy. Overall, it's a solid choice for a laugh with mates or a bite to eat, but I'd say it's best if you're in the mood for energy and entertainment rather than a peaceful retreat – just keep an eye on the crowd and you'll likely have a grand time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant and make you feel right at home, with plenty of mentions of folks like Paul and Claire going above and beyond.
-
The food is spot on – homemade and tasty, with a wide menu that offers great value, especially with drinks at prices that won't break the bank.
-
It's got a cracking atmosphere with lively evening entertainment like karaoke and discos, perfect for a fun night out or even a birthday bash.
-
Free WiFi and parking are a nice touch, and it's conveniently close to Newcastle, making it easy to pop in for a drink or stay over.
Cons
-
There have been some dodgy moments with unsupervised kids in areas meant for adults, like the game room, which can spoil the vibe and lead to chaos.
-
A few reviews mention it feeling a bit unruly at times, so it might not be the most relaxed spot if you're after a quiet pint.
-
The place seems to have mixed vibes overall, with some experiences being fantastic and others falling flat, so it pays to check what's on before heading over.

Beautiful place for drinks and food also great entertainment
Came here for the football - was awful. I don't harshly review places - but it was. Went into the game room with the adults only sign and it was filled with kids with no parents in sight. They were eating off the pool table and quite litterally fighting each other on the floor. Similar with the entrance; Child sat on the sofa screaming at top volume while parents were outside with a pint!
You could see parents wandering around trying to figure out where there kids were and the staff didn't seem awfully bothered about it.
As of me writing this there are kids fighting with pool cues, throwing things about and being generally irritating.
Booked a table and they had put us in the game room despite booking in person and requesting an area which had then been taken over by locals who the staff "didn't want to upset".
Due to family watching the game we stuck around. Been a couple of hours now and the same kids are still just messing about with no parents in sight.
Fantastic place to stay staff very friendly, food was lush & the beer was cheap Paul the host was brilliant and red wine & coke is the future great atmosphere everyone made you feel welcome 5* for me hope to go back in the near future.
Lovely hotel & great staff, value for money with good food & plenty off . Paul manger showed us around on arrival even fire exit 😂. Fully socked bar at spoons prices with wide range of food available. Evening entertainment disco / karaoke. The hotel on top of a hill so walk into Newcastle or Gateshead no trouble with £10 in taxi from other side of Tyne or £2 on a bus (58)all run regularly with stop not far from hotel .
Personally I preferred Gateshead down hill local pubs meeting locals rather than bustle of hay market expensive with stag party’s/ tourists.
I recently stayed here for a 50th birthday party. The staff were amazing, so accommodating. I need to give a special shout-out to Claire, she is an absolute credit to the business! Nothing was too much hassle for her, she went above and beyond to ensure we had a great stay. A true gem!
Food was lovely, booze were well priced and beds were comfy. All in all, a great trip.
