About This Pub

Oh, the Bay Horse in Gateshead is one of those unpretentious spots that just feels like a proper local haunt, you know? From what folks have shared, the staff are dead helpful and always up for a bit of banter, which really makes the place welcoming. It's pocket-friendly too, so you can settle in for a pint or two without it costing the earth. I love the idea of that small beer garden – it's a cracking find on a sunny Saturday, with some tunes piping through the speakers to keep things lively. They've even got good feedback on the pints and a buffet that sounds spot on for gatherings. But, let's be honest, it's not without its flaws. The opening hours are a bit limited, so you might find yourself out of luck if you're keen for a midweek drink. The decor could use a spruce-up, as it feels a tad dated, and there are niggles like the toilets not having basics sorted. Plus, a couple of people mentioned dodgy drinks being on offer, which is never ideal. All in all, if you're after a straightforward, community-focused bar without any fuss, it's worth popping in – just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a good time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's surprisingly affordable, so you can enjoy a good pint without worrying about the wallet.
  • The atmosphere is welcoming with a mix of locals, and they've got great tunes playing inside and out, perfect for a relaxed vibe.
  • There's a cosy little beer garden, which is a lovely spot for a sunny afternoon.
  • They serve a decent pint and even put on a good buffet for special occasions, based on what I've heard from others.
Cons
  • The pub isn't open for long hours or every day, which means you might miss out if you're planning a spontaneous visit.
  • It could do with some updating – the decor feels a bit tired and in need of a refresh.
  • The facilities in the gents' toilets aren't up to scratch, like no hand dryer, which is a bit of a letdown.
  • There have been issues with out-of-date drinks being served, so it's worth double-checking what you're getting.

Not pleasant, the pub needs decorating, no hand drier or towels in the gents toilets, so no way of drying your hands.
