About This Pub

Ah, the Story Teller – it's one of those reliable locals that you end up returning to for a good feed and a catch-up. I have to say, their carvery really shines on a good day; picture tucking into those 14-hour slow-cooked meats that are moist and packed with taste, paired with fresh veg and a generous dollop of gravy – it's just the ticket for a Sunday roast. The staff are an absolute gem, always cheerful and attentive, which makes the whole experience feel warm and inviting, especially if you're with the family. They've got loads of nice touches too, like the beer garden for a sunny pint or the soft play for the little ones, and it's dead handy being right by the retail park with easy parking. On the downside, though, I've heard a few mates mention that the sides can let the side down sometimes – think greasy roasties or fatty gammon that doesn't quite hit the mark – and the place does have that worn-around-the-edges feel in spots, which might put you off if you're after something a bit more polished. Still, for a budget-friendly night out or a quick meal, it's worth giving it a go; just keep your expectations realistic and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The carvery is a real highlight – those slow-cooked meats are juicy and full of flavour, perfect for a hearty meal.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always up for a chat and making sure you have everything you need.
  • It's super family-friendly with things like a soft play area and beer garden, ideal for a relaxed day out.
  • Plenty of parking and a convenient spot near the shopping park and football stadium, making it easy to pop in.
  • Good value for money with affordable options, especially their small plates and carvery deals.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss; some dishes like the roast potatoes or gammon might turn up greasy or underwhelming.
  • The area around the pub feels a bit run-down in places, which takes away from the overall vibe.
  • Occasional maintenance slips, like the carving station needing a quick tidy, even when things are buzzing.
  • It's your standard Greene King spot, so it might not stand out if you're after something more unique or upscale.

Had a great carvery here today. Food was fab. Pub had a good atmosphere and staff were very friendly. Served at the bar by a friendly staff member called Amy who was lovely and chatty and made sure we had everything we needed. Definitely recommend a visit!

We stopped in for a drink whilst out shopping and went out to the play park. The area seems a little run down but otherwise it's your standard Greene King. Ample parking. *update - stopped for food this time - poor carvery (old, greasy roasties, fatty gammon, dregs of beef) where the best thing about it was the gravy (!!) and a poor 'Jumbo' Crispy Chicken was more of a kids meal size. Greasy chicken, rock hard peas. Hot sauce was nice.

The food was great. The gammon and the roasted meat was cooked to prefection and smell divine, both meats were very moisty and perfecly cooked they melted in my mouth, the onion greavy was delicious and rich elevating the dish to a higher standard. The mash was delicious soft and creamy exacly how it should be. The veggies were ok, but not the potatoes, the bigger potatos was slightly raw wich means they needed a few more mins to get ready thats the only reason for a 4 star rating. But i will cameback for sure.

The only reason I'm giving 3 stars is for the only fact that the meat slices are not to the standard of size not thickness. And the roast potatoes was not very nice at all. But all round the meat was cooked well an the veg was lovely. Gravy gorgeous/onion. I know from working in a carvery pub that the slices of meat should be to a certain weight but what was given was not a slice. Maybe a chef that's had more experience would know this.. keep up the good work and the friendly service. Well enjoyed after a days fishing

This is my favourite place to eat, the staff are so welcome. You feel chilled and relaxed. It’s very tidy when you walk in, one thing I did notice was at the end of the carving station needed cleaning but I do understand times are busy.
