About This Pub

Ah, the Spread Eagle, what a lovely little find in Romiley! I've got to say, chatting about it feels like recommending a mate's favourite spot. From what I've gathered, the place has this warm, welcoming atmosphere that just draws you in, especially after a stroll along the canal – it's newly done up, so it has that fresh, comfortable feel without losing its traditional pub charm. The staff are brilliant, always on hand with a smile and quick service, making sure everyone enjoys their time without any fuss. Food-wise, it's a winner; the carvery and fish and chips come highly praised, and they've got thoughtful options for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free choices, which is great for keeping things inclusive. It's also spot on for families or if you're out with the dog mid-week – just check those times to avoid any surprises. On the flip side, it's not all perfect; a few have noted that while the main dishes are spot-on, some like the pies can be a bit underwhelming, so you might want to play it safe with the crowd-pleasers. Prices are moderate, which is fair, but it could add up if you're planning a big get-together. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed pint or a hearty meal, and I'd definitely pop in again – just remember to book ahead for the carvery if you can!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely – friendly, attentive, and make you feel right at home, which really adds to the whole experience.
  • The food is a real highlight; the carvery and fish and chips get rave reviews, with folks saying they're some of the best they've had, and there are great options for vegetarians, vegans, and those avoiding gluten.
  • It's a welcoming spot for families and even well-behaved dogs on certain days, making it ideal for a relaxed outing with the little ones or your furry mate.
  • The atmosphere is warm and cosy, especially after a walk along the nearby canal, and it's newly refurbished, so everything feels fresh and inviting.
  • With a solid 4.5 rating from plenty of visitors, it's clear this place knows how to deliver a good time, whether you're popping in for a quick drink or a full meal.
Cons
  • While most of the menu shines, a few have mentioned that some items like the pies don't quite live up to the high standards of the carvery, so it might be worth sticking to the stars of the show.
  • The operating hours are a bit limited for food service, mainly around lunch and evening slots, which could be tricky if you're after a late bite.
  • It's moderately priced, but if you're on a tight budget, the costs might add up for a family meal or with drinks included.

Recent Reviews

I recently visited the Spread Eagle, it exceeded all expectations! From the moment we walked in, the warm and welcoming atmosphere made us feel right at home. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive without being overbearing, and genuinely seemed to enjoy what they do. The foods were very tasty and lovely. Can’t wait to come back!

10/10 pub grub, service and settings. Probably the best pub fish and chips I’ve ever had.

Our party of nine were very well received for lunch by friendly and attentive staff. Cosy atmosphere. Those whose chose the carvery (6)were delighted with their choice. The other three chose from the pies available. Accompanying side orders (chips and veg) were excellent, but the pies were rather disappointing, lacking flavour. Nevertheless, we would all come again next time we're in the area.

While B&Bing in the area to drop a friend off the following day (Sunday) at Manchester Airport we called in here after a local recommendation from someone at the nearby Dobbies garden centre. Had not booked but Trisha on the desk was really friendly and helpful and found us a table coming free after about a half hour wait. Had drinks in the bar area ( poor really as small and only high stools at a few tables). We were shown to a table in the ‘veranda extension’ area and very pleasant it was too ( only 2 tables there and a bit quieter than the main areas). Atmosphere in the pub is lovely, as was the service . Decided to have the Carvery and very nice (£13). Note that a 10% service charge is made on your bill but the waitresses look to work really hard, remaining pleasant etc….so please accept it ( you can have it removed if you want but that would be a shame on you). We even gave the two girls who served us an extra tip.

Everything is good. Lovely atmosphere. Friendly (and pretty) staff. Foods are presented very nice. I ordered battered fish for my son and the battered layer is thin and crispy. It’s really amazing. We definitely will come again.
