About This Pub
Ah, Skehan's – it's one of those pubs that just feels like home the moment you walk in, with its cosy front bar, pool table, and that wood-burning stove keeping things toasty in winter. I've heard from folks who've been there that the live music sessions are brilliant, from Monday jams to Sunday folk nights, creating this infectious energy that gets everyone involved. The Guinness is always poured just right and won't break the bank, and pairing it with a Thai meal from their on-site restaurant is a lovely surprise. It's clear from the chatter that the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, even on busy evenings. On the flip side, it does get rammed at times, especially for the big gigs, so you might have to jostle for space or plan ahead. And that £10 card minimum? A minor grumble, but it's easy enough to work around with some coins in your pocket. All in all, if you're in South London and fancy a proper pub experience with a mix of music, mates, and maybe a quiz, Skehan's is well worth seeking out – it's got that heart and soul that makes you want to come back for more.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing, especially with live music happening six days a week – it's a proper treat for anyone who loves a good singalong or a folk session.
-
Guinness is spot on and reasonably priced, making it a wallet-friendly spot for a pint or two with mates.
-
Friendly bar staff who always seem up for a chat, even when things get hectic, which really adds to that welcoming, community feel.
-
They've got a cracking Thai restaurant on site, plus a hidden garden out back – perfect for a bite and a breather on a sunny day.
-
Loads of events like quiz nights, jams, and karaoke keep things lively and give you plenty of reasons to pop in regularly.
Cons
-
It can get pretty packed on weekends, so you might end up queueing for a drink or struggling to find a seat, which isn't ideal if you're after a quiet one.
-
The card payment minimum is a bit of a nuisance at £10, so it's worth having some cash on hand to avoid any hassle.
-
Operating hours seem a tad inconsistent from what's listed, which could catch you out if you're planning a visit outside the usual times.

This has been one of our favourite pubs for a while now. The Guinness is good/ reasonably priced and the atmosphere of a weekend is often lively. We recently popped in for the Sunday roast, which surpassed expectations! Get there early for a table.
What a fantastic night. Great live band, wicked atmosphere. The place was packed out with everyone having a great time. The bar staff do a tremendous job considering how many customers they have to serve. They were all so friendly and polite with smiles on their faces. I would definitely recommend this pub.
First time here! Excellent pub, went lunchtime on a Sunday and was nice and quiet, which I can imagine was lucky. Great spot, near the Nunhead train station.
Well worth a visit, definitely one of the top pubs in South east London.

Skehan’s is located in a residential area in Nunhead Southeast London. The nearest station is Nunhead mainline.
This pub started life as The Duke of Albany, built in 1895. Skehan’s is an Irish pub which came to be just under 10 years, and today one of the most celebrated pubs in London.
This Victorian corner pub is very easy on the eye with lots of foliage, hanging baskets and detailed stonework.
This is a traditionally decorated, high ceilinged, one bar pub that is set out in an L-shape. The servery has a solid wood counter and is surrounded by green velour topped stools. To the right of the servery is an ornate fireplace flanked by shelves covered in bric-a-brac. The seating is conventional with a couple of banquettes around the perimeter. Everywhere you look around this pub there is always something of interest. Some of the most notable features are on the ceiling where you’ll find beautiful cornicing and unique fans. Towards the back of the bar is a pool table, behind is a door which leads to a tiered beer garden.
The beer selection will please the masses and offers a choice of well known brews, three cask ales and of course Guinness. As this is an Irish boozer, my choice was simple and I ordered a stout. My pint was thoroughly enjoyable and cost just north of a fiver. The food menu is Thai and is served in the restaurant, Roasts take centre stage on a Sunday.
We arrived just after 12pm on a sunny Saturday lunchtime in July. We received a warm welcome by the team member on duty who was friendly and courteous. We decided to sit at the bar and got chatting to a local chap who was friendly also. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed with a homely local pub feel. This pub attracts a broad range of punters from local students to longtime regulars and hosts live music 6 days a week, including Traditional Irish Music.
Visiting @skehansfreehouse was an authentic Irish Pub experience, the hype is real, we loved it. This independent, family-run pub is all you would want your local pub to be. We’re so glad we visited and will definitely make a pilgrimage again soon.

Good pub. Irish themed. Guinness was excellent. Pub not too busy on Thursday evening. Looks like there is live music sometimes. There is a Thai restaurant onsite, in a separate room, but you may eat in the bar. Unusual rotating fans in roof. There is a £10 minimum for cards, but cash is fine too. Young crowd reflecting area.
