About This Pub

So, chatting about Ryans Bar in Derby, it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its warm, friendly vibe – the staff are absolute gems, always up for a chat and making sure everyone feels welcome. You've got the pool tables for a bit of friendly competition, and the live music or comedy nights add that extra spark for a memorable evening. The food's another highlight; fresh, homemade stuff like the vegan lasagne that's surprisingly brilliant, or those perfectly crunchy chips that hit the spot after a few pints. On the downside, though, it's a pity about the toilets – they're not in great nick with leaks and blockages, which might make you think twice. Plus, I've heard it's had some rough patches with more trouble kicking off and the police getting involved, and overall, the place is starting to look a bit tired, with the Guinness not living up to expectations. All in all, it's worth popping in for the good times if you're in the area, but go in with your eyes open to the bits that need a fix – it's got heart, but could do with a freshen-up to keep the fun flowing.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home for a proper good time.
  • It's got a lively atmosphere with pool tables and fun events like live music, poetry, and comedy nights that keep things entertaining.
  • The food hits the spot, especially the vegan options like that cheesy lasagne – fresh and tasty, with crunchy chips that are spot on.
Cons
  • The toilets are in a bit of a state, with leaks and blocked drains that could put a damper on your visit.
  • It's gone downhill in places, with more trouble and police call-outs lately, which has affected the vibe.
  • The pub is looking a tad worn out, and the Guinness isn't quite up to the mark, which is a shame for an Irish-themed spot.

This pub used to have a brilliant atmosphere when the current landlord took it on. But has now gone drastically downhill due to the amount of trouble and times that police have had to be called. The men’s toilets in this place are a major hazard to health with a leaking system blocked drains in the urinals and flooded floors. As well as this the hand dryer has been ripped off the wall with live wiring exposed. Corner of the urinal is bent with sharp edges and skirting missing, mould on the ceiling and an awful stench. Something needs to be done with it as soon as possible as it is horrendous.

OK city centre Irish "themed" bar with an eclectic mix of locals, pool table, plenty of seating & loud music. Looking a bit tired at the moment, the Gunness is not the best & the toilets are far from pleasant, so perhaps just go for the experience. Or, go for the live music, poetry & comedy nights when they're back on

I can confirm all the positives that have so far been posted to be true. Cheesey vegan lasagne better than the real cheese version, I don't know how! They need to start doing pizzas! The Chips are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The food is all freshly prepared, just like you'd do it at home, which for me, is important. No microwave meals here. Try not to be too deterred by the appearance of the building and some of the clientele, the food I ate was high end stuff. Ambience is relaxed and friendly, with staff eager to please. Definitely recommended. I would encourage all, but vegans especially, take a look at the menu I ordered from. Two meals for £10.95 has to be worth a try while in Derby.
