About This Pub
So, I've been having a look at Robert Raikes's House in Gloucester, and it's got that classic pub feel that's just inviting from the get-go. From the reviews, the Sunday roasts stand out as a real highlight – folks are buzzing about the generous portions, like the unbelievable beef and gorgeous potatoes, and it's all reasonably priced, which is always a win. The place has these lovely nooks and crannies, plus a big beer garden that's ideal for soaking up the sun or huddling by an open fire on chillier days. It's a Samuel Smiths spot too, so you might stumble upon some hard-to-find brews, which is a nice surprise. On the flip side, it's not all perfect; a couple of people mentioned their food arriving overcooked or not piping hot, and there were grumbles about slow service or beer that's not as cold as it should be. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.2, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area, especially for a relaxed lunch or a quiet evening – just keep expectations in check for those busier moments. All in all, it's a solid choice for a good feed and a chat, but like any spot, it has its ups and downs.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The Sunday roasts are an absolute treat – plenty of meat, piping hot, and packed with flavour, making it a go-to for a proper hearty meal.
-
The staff are so warm and welcoming, always up for a chat and making you feel right at home, which really adds to the cosy vibe.
-
There's a brilliant beer garden with loads of seating and tucked-away spots, perfect for enjoying a pint on a sunny day or in a quiet corner.
Cons
-
Food quality can be hit or miss, with some mentioning overcooked dishes or things not coming out as hot as they'd hoped.
-
Service might drag a bit during busier times, leaving you waiting longer than you'd like for your order.
-
A few have noted the beer not being quite at the right temperature, which can put a dampener on things.

Went here as heard they are starting Sunday lunches. Knowing the Chef is good we weren't disappointed by our lunch. Plenty of meat and nice and hot. Reasonably priced. There is plenty of seating inside and outside with nice tucked away areas. Beer garden that is nice and big.
This is a Samuel Smiths pub so only do their own drinks. They also encourage no phones but did only use mine to take photos for review. Place is clean and tidy. Staff friendly and welcoming and helpful. There is a pool table. There meal times is Monday to Friday 12.00 - 3pm then 6pm - 9pm. Saturday is 12.00 - 9.00pm and Sunday is 12.00 - 4pm. I would recommend and go again.. There is a nice variety of meals on the menu..
Went again and had a really lovely roast dinner. Nice and tasty. Adults Roast is £12.50 and A Child's is £7.95. Someone had the child's and definitely looked value for money.
Since writing this review have found out that the Chef mentioned is no longer there or the manager.
Haven't been in for a while but will update once gone back..
Popped into this delight on the off chance they might still be doing Sunday lunch as it was later in the afternoon. Luckily they were and boy was it worth us going in. The chatty lady serving us was so warm and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. I had roast chicken lunch and the hubby had the beetroot wellington which he said was the best he'd tasted! Would highly recommend this lovely pub...don't walk past it go right in you won't regret it.
I was visiting Gloucester for the evening with my daughter and went in because it’s a nice looking pub and the menu looked okay. The atmosphere was fine, not Gastro pub, not boozer. There’s some charm, but also a pool table etc so caters for everyone.
The prices on the menu looked quite good value versus what you often see these days. We ordered the chicken tikka masala and a cheese burger. It’s a pay up front place. My daughter enjoyed the curry.
The burger bun, cheese, gerkin & fries were all okay but the burger itself was a horror show. In 2025 it rare to find anything but a reasonable quality burger in a pub, but this looked like a compressed puck that was straight from the freezer and then nuked in the microwave.
It had a hard chewy crust which was several mm thick and then just a uniform flavourless consistency throughout the rest. I forced most of it down as we were up against time and I treated it as “fuel” and I’d had to pay in advance. Towards the end I had to spit it out due to an appalling taste…. I was concerned it may have been off. (Writing this the next morning I’m fortunately not ill)
I literally can’t remember the last time I was presented with such a low quality product. Would have been much better at McDonalds….. So, please for the love of god up your game otherwise it’s impossible to recommend a visit to what is, otherwise, quite a nice pub.
Just had a Sunday roast 😋 absolutely fantastic food, beef was unbelievable, potatoes gorgeous, definitely going to be my Sunday roast going forward 😋
What an absolutely unexpected tunnel of delights! Stumbled upon this place and was overwhelmed by the nooks and crannies. Bartender was an absolute gem, they had Samuel Smith apricot beer (hard to find!) and she recommended us the room with an open fire. Iconic establishment and worth exploring!
