About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about Rat Race Ale House – it's this delightful little gem tucked away at Hartlepool Railway Station, and it's all about celebrating the best of real ale in a way that feels genuinely warm and unpretentious. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the beer selection is where it really excels; they've got an impressive lineup of ales, ciders, and even some Belgian treats that would make any ale enthusiast's day. The atmosphere is just brilliant – think quirky signs and wall decorations that add a splash of humour and make you feel right at home, perfect for a relaxed catch-up or waiting for a train. The staff come across as absolute stars, always friendly and ready for a good chinwag, which adds to that cosy, community feel. But, and I have to be straight with you, it's not without its quirks; the space is tiny, so you might struggle if it's busy, and those irregular hours, like being closed on Sundays and Mondays or taking the odd holiday break, can be a bit of a letdown if you're planning a spontaneous trip. Plus, if you're not keen on ales or have a dog in tow, it might not be your first choice. Overall, though, it's a solid spot for anyone who fancies a no-nonsense pint in a characterful setting – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but maybe check the opening times first to avoid disappointment!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of real ales, ciders, and even some top-notch Belgian brews – it's a real treat for anyone who appreciates a proper pint.
-
The atmosphere is quirky and full of personality, with fun signs and wall coverings that make you smile and spark great conversations – it's like stepping into a cosy, no-fuss hideaway.
-
The staff, especially the landlord, are incredibly friendly and chatty, always up for a natter and sharing their knowledge, which makes every visit feel welcoming and relaxed.
-
It's got that authentic, straightforward vibe that's hard to find these days – perfect for a quick stop or a laid-back catch-up with mates.
Cons
-
The place is quite small with limited seating, so it can fill up quickly and might not be ideal if you're after a spacious spot for a larger group.
-
Opening hours are a bit unpredictable, with closures on Sundays and Mondays, and even some extended breaks like holidays, which could leave you out in the cold if you fancy a visit.
-
No dogs allowed, which is a shame if you're out with your furry friend, as it might put off some folk who like to bring their pets along.
-
It's strictly no lager and very focused on ales, so if you're not into that scene, you might find the options a tad limited for your tastes.

Top pub, tiny, awesome wall coverings, landlord bang on, proper Durham Coast no nonsense. Want that Vaux Notice Board sign though, have to trip down soon to bargain....
Absolutely loved this place, I would highly recommend to anyone. It's fun, quirky and unusual. Staff are friendly, chatty and knowledgeable. We had such a laugh whilst waiting for our train. Laughed so much at funny signs. So much personality about it. I loved the No larger no entry sign haha. Ale is listed on the board, loved the funny comments. Good selection and prices. Toilets are clean and well maintained. Would be happy to go in alone. Xo
A quirky little micropub, very straight forward in the message, good beer, flat cider, no nonsense!
A dedicated real ale pub (no lager). Ciders and a few wines and good Belgium beers. Seating for about 12. Some pub games and reading material. The landlord was friendly and insisted on table service. Regulars were very happy to have a chat.
Has to be THE ONLY real ale place in Hartlepool.
Not been in here in Donkey's Years, but as haters of lager and lovers of ales we were suitable welcomed. Instantly reminded that we should be coming here far more often. Good ale selection and a friendly cosy atmosphere. I'll definitely be back soon, maybe even regularly. Worth the effort.
