About This Pub

Ah, Malt and Hops, what a lovely spot it's turned into since reopening in 2022! I have to say, it's one of those places that just warms your heart from the get-go, with its blend of old-school pub history from the 1850s and a smart modern twist. From what I've gathered from the reviews and their website, the food is where they really shine – those Sunday roasts sound mouthwatering, with juicy chicken and delightful extras like pistachio ice cream for dessert, all made with fresh, local ingredients. And let's not forget the drinks; they've got an amazing array of beers and cocktails that folks rave about, perfect for unwinding after a long week. The service gets a big thumbs up too – it's all about that friendly chat and efficient care that makes you feel like you're among mates. On the flip side, while the garden is a fantastic feature for al fresco sipping, it seems the tables out there need a bit of fixing up to avoid any nasty surprises like splinters. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed meal or a lively quiz night, but if you're after something more down-to-earth, it might feel a tad polished. I'd definitely recommend popping in for a visit; it's got that special something that could make it your new go-to in North Finchley.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Sunday roasts are absolutely spot on – tender chicken, tasty sides like cauliflower, and even free desserts thrown in, which makes for a cracking meal.
  • Service is top-notch; the staff are really friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They've got an impressive beer selection with loads of lagers on tap, plus great cocktails that go down a treat, all at reasonable prices like Prosecco for just £5.50 a glass.
  • The atmosphere is brilliant after their recent makeover – it's got that perfect mix of traditional pub charm and modern style, creating a welcoming vibe.
  • Outdoor seating in the huge garden is a winner, especially on sunny days, giving you a lovely spot to relax and enjoy your drinks.
Cons
  • The outdoor tables could do with some TLC; a couple of folks mentioned splinters, so you might want to watch out if you're sitting outside.
  • It feels a bit more upmarket than your average local pub, which is nice for a special outing but might not hit the spot if you're after that rough-and-ready traditional feel.

Came for a quiet Sunday Roast, wasn't disappointed. Free dessert offer also running at the time. Really friendly service so I left full and happy, tasty Prosecco £5.50 a glass, tables out back in the sunshine 👍🏽 but might need a bit of a sanding down, splinters, ouch.

I went for Sunday lunch in the Malt for the first time today and it was a lovely afternoon. Upon arrival, we approached the bar and the beer selection was brilliant. There were 8 different lagers on tap which is unheard of in North London. We looked through the menu. There was a great selection and we opted for the lamb roast. It arrived in 30 mins which is ideal. The lamb was cooked beautifully and was perfectly tender and moist. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. I'm not a big fan of veg but it was cooked very well. Throughout the meal, the barman, Micky, was exceptionally attentive. He offered us a wide range of sauces, asked us how we were enjoying our food and if he could get us anything else. He took it to the next level by noticing when our drinks were running low and took our drinks order at the table and brought our drinks to us. He was really friendly and we had a nice chat with him. We will definitely be back!

A slightly different take on the British Pub. They have clearly made an effort to make it more stylish and upmarket. A more modern look, the dark grey painted wood panels and wall paper contrasting with the white ceilings. The food overall is better than your average pub and the service is great. They also have salsa classes every other Tuesday if you're into that. Starters of bang bang shrimps and pan fried padron peppers. The shrimps were excellent. Main: 10oz sirloin steak with hand cut chunky chips and peppercorn sauce. The sizzling steak served on a planxa was delicious, of good quality and very well cooked. The chips, however, could have been better. As a dessert, chocolate and hazelnut cheesecake, adequate for the place. In brief, a modern looking pub, the food better than the average, with good service and reasonably priced. Definitely a 4* for a pub.

Here we have a pub which a renovation after closing for years has done it wonders! I only once walked into the old pub and walked straight back out, it wasn't a very pleasant place.. compared to now, my God there's a very nice vibe (atmosphere) & the management are great! The cocktails went down an absolute treat, all freshly made and bursting with flavours! If you're into Espresso Martini's then I'd highly recommend this place as it's one of the best I've ever had 👏🏼 The food was exceptional, the Lemon Garlic Pork Shank & Fishmonger Proposal were devine; much less the Mussels Meuniere starter that didn't have quite the right thickness of sauce (bit too much white wine).. The customer service couldn't be topped, made to feel very welcomed 😊 5* Would recommend on overall positive experience 👍🏼
