About This Pub

Ah, Lussmanns Fish & Grill – it's one of those places that really stands out in Hitchin for its commitment to ethical and sustainable dining, which I think is just fantastic if you're looking for something a bit more thoughtful on your plate. From what I've gathered, the food is generally a delight; think perfectly cooked fish like the trout or hake that's full of flavour and beautifully presented, making for a memorable meal. The service is another highlight – it's warm and attentive, just like chatting with a mate who's got your back. Plus, with outdoor terraces and private dining options, it's versatile for everything from a casual get-together to a special occasion. On the flip side, though, it's not without its drawbacks; a few folks have mentioned that the portions feel a bit skimpy, especially if you're used to more substantial fare, and some dishes haven't quite hit the mark in terms of taste or presentation, which could leave you a tad disappointed. Overall, it's a solid choice for a refined evening out, but I'd say it's best if you're in the mood for quality over quantity – just keep those expectations balanced, and you're in for a treat.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely top-notch, with beautifully cooked fish dishes like trout and hake that leave you wanting more for all the right reasons.
  • Service is spot on – friendly and efficient, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They've got a real focus on sustainability, which is brilliant if you're into ethical dining; it's all about supporting local suppliers and doing things the right way.
  • The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed, perfect for a catch-up with mates or a special evening out, and they've got nice outdoor spaces for when the weather's playing ball.
  • Plenty of options for different tastes, including meat and veggie choices, plus things like private dining areas for a bit of exclusivity.
Cons
  • Portions can be on the small side, so if you're after a hearty, gut-busting meal, you might leave feeling a tad peckish.
  • Some dishes have been described as a bit underwhelming – poorly presented or lacking in flavour, which is a shame when the rest is so good.
  • It leans towards fine dining, so it might not hit the spot if you're just in the mood for something straightforward and unfussy.
  • Prices are moderate, but with mains around £20, it could feel a bit steep if the experience doesn't quite live up to expectations.

If you want a gut busting big plate of food this is probably not for you. If you want beautifully cooked and presented fine dining then this is the place. The missus and I enjoyed a fabulous evening here. My trout was especially delicious. Service great too Thank you

Excellent fish restaurant in Hitchin. All dishes ordered on our table were really good. Also does meat and veggie options. Hake is recommended. Good service and atmosphere. Mains around £20 and worth it. Parking available within short distance.

Visiting on business and needed a place for dinner. I was very happy, the crab linguine had ample crab and flavorful. I had reviewed the menu outside but the description of the special which was a chicken Fricassee sounded so good I selected it and was as good as it sounded. Pleasant restaurant and friendly staff. Service could have been a bit faster but I was not in a hurry.

Really friendly staff and nice enough atmosphere but sadly really poor food. All our starters were tiny, poorly presented and tasted very average and mains were pretty flavourless. The set menu price wasn't bad but it seemed like an attempt at fine dining just so they could serve small portions instead of high quality dishes. Wouldn't return or recommend which is a shame because the staff were lovely.
