About This Pub

You know, chatting about In The Meantime feels like sharing tips over a pint with mates – it's this independent gem in Carlisle that's got a lot going for it, with an overall rating of 4.4 that shows most folks leave happy. The food stands out as a real highlight; imagine tucking into perfectly prepared starters and mains like steak strips that melt in your mouth or hearty fajitas that hit the spot, all made with fresh, local ingredients that give everything that authentic, buzz-worthy flavour. The atmosphere is just right too – warm and relaxed, perfect for a casual get-together, and they've nailed the inclusivity with plenty of vegan and gluten-free choices, plus staff who are spot on with checking for allergies from the off. But, let's be straight, it's not all roses; there are tales of undercooked burgers and unexpected add-ons to the bill that could leave you a bit miffed, and sometimes the service doesn't quite live up to the hype, like when they don't clarify how you want your meal done. Still, with high praise for their generous portions and overall vibe, I'd say it's a solid pick for a meal out – just keep an eye on the details to avoid any surprises, and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients that really make each dish sing – think perfectly cooked steaks and generous portions that leave you feeling satisfied.
  • The staff are friendly and attentive, always checking for dietary needs right from the start, which makes it a welcoming spot for everyone, including those with vegan or gluten-free preferences.
  • It's got a warm and pleasant atmosphere, ideal for a relaxed meal, whether you're popping in for a quick bite or settling in for a proper Sunday roast.
  • They offer a great variety of options, from breakfast to Asian-inspired cuisine and burgers, so there's something to suit all tastes and occasions.
Cons
  • There have been a few complaints about undercooked dishes, like burgers that weren't done properly, which could put a dampener on your meal and raise some health concerns.
  • Some extras, such as cranberry sauce with a Christmas dinner, might come with unexpected additional charges, making the bill a bit more than you bargained for.
  • Service can occasionally fall short, with instances where staff didn't seem proactive about things like specifying how you'd like your food cooked, leading to a less than ideal experience.

We ordered 3 different starters and 3 different mains. Everything was perfect, cooked exactly as we had requested. Portions also quite generous. My steak strips (medium rare) melted like butter in the mouth. Very happy with the service and there was a pleasant atmosphere.

Food was uncooked, I ordered the Bacon double cheeseburger with fries, The fries were fine however the burger was undercooked and pink inside, When I pointed this out to the server she replied you should tell us how you want your burger cooked, and still charged me full price for a meal I refused to eat. I suggest you stay away, Unless you want to get ill, Was a decent place however the standard is below what is expected.

We were a party of 7 that spend £200+ on food and drink, I Ordered the Xmas dinner for £19, the menu said it came with all the trimmings, but when I asked for cranberry sauce I was informed that would be £1.50 extra !! So not all the trimmings then, but for some reason a dish of pigs in blankets ( £7.50 ) came with cranberry sauce. Back to the dinner, roast potatoes were dry. Not impressed at all.

First time in Carlisle and stumbled across this place. Hands down one of the nicest meals I have had in a long time. Staff were really great, first thing they asked was around dietary needs or allergies which was really great and the menu is fantastic too We went for the Fajitas and they were absolutely amazing. Full of taste and flavour, steak was excellent quality and cut and had a portion of salt and pepper chips which were some of the best salt and pepper chips I’ve ever had! Will definitely return when I am next in Carlisle

Lovely place to go if you want a quiet, warm atmosphere and fantastic food! I had korean Butter Milk Chicken for my starter, Ramen Noodle Bowl for my main and Sticky Toffee Pudding for desert, i enjoyed every mouth full! 😋 service was excellent, there were no long waits for each course and when we needed anything staff were happy to help. I also recommend breakfast see photo's attached 😋
