About This Pub

Oh, the Hoop & Toy in South Kensington is one of those timeless London pubs that just feels like a proper gem, you know? From what I've gathered from folks who've been, it's got this warm, inviting atmosphere that's spot on for sinking into a comfy seat with a pint and watching the footie or rugby on the telly. The food really shines through – think hearty steak and ale pie or that indulgent sticky toffee pud that's got everyone raving, and at prices that won't leave your wallet weeping. The staff, particularly chaps like Miguel, are bang on with their knowledge and make you feel like you're chatting with old mates behind the bar. It's conveniently placed near the tube, too, so it's ideal for a post-explore pit stop, and it's family and dog-friendly, which adds to the charm. But, fair's fair, it does have its downsides – those reserved tables can throw a spanner in the works if you're hoping for a spontaneous visit, and while most grub is top-notch, the fish and chips didn't quite live up to expectations for a couple of people. All in all, it's a cracking spot for a relaxed evening out, as long as you keep an eye on the busier times and maybe plan ahead a tad.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, with the steak and ale pie and sticky toffee pudding getting rave reviews – proper comforting classics that leave you scraping the plate clean.
  • The staff are a delight, especially folks like Miguel who's got a great handle on the menu and makes you feel right at home with their friendly service.
  • It's got a lively, cozy atmosphere that's perfect for catching the big games, with a solid selection of beers on tap and plenty of screens to keep the excitement going.
  • Being right opposite South Kensington tube station makes it a breeze to pop in after exploring the area, and it's welcoming for families and even your furry four-legged mates.
  • Prices are fair and not too steep, making it an affordable spot for a good meal and a pint without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • Table reservations can be a bit of a faff, as it's hard to know when they'll free up, which might leave you hanging if you're just nipping in for a quick drink.
  • Not every dish hits the mark – the fish and chips was a letdown for some, so it might pay to stick to the crowd-pleasers.
  • It can get pretty busy, especially on weekends or during events, so you might end up waiting a bit longer than you'd like for service or a seat.

The steak & ale pie was delicious, same with the sticky toffee. Would recommend them both. The fish and chips was underwhelming.

Miguel is very nice with good knowledge of the menu! Order at the bar give your table number and they bring your food. Prices are good not harsh and affordable. Steak & Ale Pie are delicious with good flavor! Very hot as in fresh not spicy. The chicken karage is delicious good flavor a bit of a kick and the bbq sauce is sweet. Definitely recommend this place if you’re near or for a quick drink with your mates. Cheers

Visited the Hoop & Toy pub on a Saturday, and despite being busy, the staff handled the crowd well. Service was efficient, and I didn’t have to wait long to get served. They have a great selection of beers on draught, making it a solid spot for a drink. Lively atmosphere and good service—definitely worth a visit!

The local pub is not bad, traditional. The only downside of this establishment is that half of the tables are reserved, and even if you pop in for a beer for 15-20 minutes, the staff unfortunately has no idea what time their guests will come and take that table (it’s a not good management at all). So all those tables are empty. People have to sit at them without the staff's permission, because there is no other chance to be seated.

We had a great time at Hoop& Toy pub. Enjoyed Flat iron steak and pigs in blankets. It was good food, decent price and plates left completely empty. Nice atmosphere in the pub, all cozy and warm and with football match on :) Last but not least, special shoutout to Miguel! He was absolutely great, welcomed us from the beginning and trying to get a good table for us throughout. I will definitely come back if in the area.. And it explains why it is always full.
