About This Pub

Ah, HMS Hinchinbrook – it's one of those places in Great Yarmouth that you hear about from mates who swear by its seaside charm. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this lovely vibe right on the beach, making it ideal for a casual bite after a stroll along the promenade. The food's generally well-received, with plenty of praise for the hearty portions and good value – think massive servings of fish and chips that leave you stuffed for a fair price. The staff come across as genuinely welcoming, which really adds to the atmosphere, and even on busier days like bank holidays, they manage to keep things moving smoothly. On the flip side, it's not all plain sailing; a few have mentioned the flavours being a bit underwhelming, like the fish lacking that fresh zing or dishes turning out bland. Then there's the odd grumble about things not being piping hot, such as lukewarm chips, and some feeling the portions aren't quite as generous as advertised. Overall, with a strong average rating of 4.4, it's clear this place has a lot going for it, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations – especially if you're after something a bit more exciting on the taste front. If you're heading to Great Yarmouth, it'd be a shame to miss it, but maybe check if it's open first, as that seems a bit up in the air right now. All in all, it's a friendly spot that does the basics well, perfect for a no-fuss meal with friends.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The location is absolutely spot on, right on the beach in Great Yarmouth, with views across to the ferris wheel – it's a proper treat for a relaxed meal by the sea.
  • Portions are generous and offer brilliant value for money, leaving you feeling well satisfied without breaking the bank.
  • The staff are friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home, especially if you're popping in during quieter times.
  • Service is pretty efficient, even when it's buzzing with a crowd, so you won't be left hanging around for your food.
Cons
  • Some folks find the food a tad bland, which might not hit the spot if you're after bold flavours – it's all down to personal taste, mind you.
  • There have been complaints about the food not always tasting fresh or arriving lukewarm, like with the chips, which can be a bit disappointing.
  • Portion sizes don't always match up to what people expect, so you might end up wanting a bit more for your money in some cases.
  • It's a shame about the operating status being unclear – it seems like it might be closed at the moment, which could put a dampener on plans.

Firstly, I cannot believe I’m seeing reviews complaining about portion sizes. The portions are massive and worth the money!! I have given four stars as the food was very bland HOWEVER that is personal preference- I can 100% understand why people would love this restaurant. I used to come here as a kid when it was a cafe and I’m amazed how beautiful this restaurant now looks. Owner has done a fantastic job and should be so proud of themselves. I 100% recommend coming here if you like English food!!

lovely restaurant right on the beach across from the ferris wheel. visited during bank holiday weekend so it was fairly busy but still managed to get seated very quickly and food also arrived in good time for a large group (10/15 minutes-ish). we mostly stuck to the seafood options but there were also some nice sounding grilled meats on offer. the battered fish, fishcake and scampi were all nice and crisp with a good flavour, chips were okay. the fried pickles and battered prawns were tasty sides. only thing is that it does seem a bit pricey compared to a typical chippy but i guess its the location.

First Visited Great Yarmouth- Restaurant is clean and tidy, staff member was young but nice enough!!. Food wasn’t very tasty, I needed extra salt and pepper for my fish and chips. Large fish size wasn’t any bigger than small cod size. Fish didn’t taste fresh, chips lukewarm. Price £51 -x2 Cod’s - chips - curry sauce- x2 drinks ( pint - vodka lemonade) Really not worth it.

We went weekday off season, so it was not very busy. The waiters were friendly and attentive. Plates were a good sized portions and tasty.

Lovely welcome, great food and probably the best value for money in the area. Will definitely come again if we're in the area!
