About This Pub

Ah, the Griffin in Bowdon – it's one of those pubs that just wraps you up in a big, welcoming hug the moment you step inside. I've got to say, the staff really shine here; they're attentive without being over the top, making sure everything runs smoothly, whether you're there for a casual bite or something more meaningful like a family gathering. The food's another highlight – think generous portions of proper pub fare and those cracking Sunday roasts that feel like a comforting hug on a plate. It's ideally placed near Dunham Massey Hall, so it's spot on for a post-walk pint. On the flip side, it does get popular, which means you might have to plan ahead to avoid waiting around, and the prices, while fair, could add up if you're not careful. All in all, it's a solid choice for anyone looking for a bit of that traditional British pub magic, with the good bits outweighing any minor niggles – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The service is absolutely top-notch; the staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome, like chatting with old mates.
  • The food is a real treat, with hearty pub classics and standout Sunday roasts that leave you feeling properly satisfied.
  • It's got that cosy, rustic charm with an open fire and a warm atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a countryside walk.
  • Great for special occasions, as it's handled wakes and gatherings with real care and attention to detail.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy, especially on weekends, so you might need to book ahead to snag a table without any hassle.
  • With moderate prices, it might feel a bit pricey if you're just popping in for a quick pint rather than a full meal.

We had booked the Griffin for my mother in law's wake last week. Although it was a sad occasion, I would like to thank the Griffin for their excellent service. We were kept fully informed by email prior to the date of the wake and everything went very smoothly on the day (special thanks to Fran and Sam for looking after us so well). We had lots of comments about how nice the food was and will definitely be going back!

Enjoyed a fantastic Sunday dinner at The Griffin, with generous servings of meats, rich gravy, and a towering Yorkshire pudding. The service today was excellent, attentive without feeling rushed. I would happily recommend this pub to anyone nearby. The menu offered plenty of tempting choices. Although it was surprisingly quiet for a Sunday, the quality of the food and service remained outstanding. The only slight disappointment was the potatoes, which lacked the same standard as the rest of the meal. That said, given how flawless everything else was, I am confident it was a one-off and suspect the abnormally peaceful pub was the reason for the dry potatoes. Nothing the delicious gravy couldn't handle though!

Absolutely exceptional service from Sebastian and Lara tonight. Visited with 3 friends who all have very busy lives so once a month we like to have a catch up and this time we chose this old favourite we used to visit back in the day. We’ve tried all the fancy places in and around the area over the last few years but tonight was something on another level. That is by far the best evening we have had whilst going out for food in a very long time, if ever. I’m involved in hospitality so I get the struggles, I understand the hardships on owners and businesses at the minute and I get how it can filter down to the staff morale. Uncertainty and pressure isn’t a great mix when your job is to put on a smile each and everyday. The level of management shown this evening was absolutely outstanding. To be able to deliver that level of service and create such a warm, friendly and relaxed environment was remarkable. Envious for us to the point we left considering offering job opportunities to the staff because the service we received was above anything we had received elsewhere. Those staff just demonstrated that service, atmosphere and attentiveness go above anything else. Keep your 5 star, reservation only, award winning menus. I’d choose a night like tonight over anywhere else we’ve tried. So much so, we know where we are coming from now on. Sebastian, don’t ever change. Warwick, Dan, Claire Green and Socks!
