About This Pub
Ah, Eltham GPO – what a lovely little find in the midst of bustling Eltham, isn't it? I have to say, it's grown on me quite a bit; the way they've transformed an old post office into this warm, inviting space with a roaring fire and a cracking beer garden makes it just the ticket for a relaxed catch-up or a lively night out. The Sunday roasts are an absolute treat – think juicy meats or a solid veggie Wellington paired with those fluffy roasties and lashings of gravy – and they've really upped their game with events like live gigs and quizzes, which add a fun buzz without overwhelming the place. Plus, the menu's got a good mix of pub grub and more creative options, like those delicious Korean chicken bites, showing they're putting real effort into keeping things fresh. But, let's be honest, it's not all sunshine; I've heard a few grumbles about the atmosphere feeling a tad one-sided with not enough women on staff, which can make it seem a bit bro-centric at times. Space is another niggle – tables can be hard to come by, especially if it's packed, and there are stories of strong fishy smells or the odd chilly evening that might put a dampener on things. Oh, and if you're not a dog lover, you might find the four-legged visitors a bit much. All in all, it's a solid spot for a good time, especially if you're local and up for the events, but it'd be even better with a few tweaks to make everyone feel right at home.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The refurbishment is spot on – it's turned a former post office into a cosy, welcoming spot that's perfect for a quiet pint by the fire or catching up with mates in the beer garden.
-
They've got a cracking Sunday roast with succulent meats or a tasty veggie option, complete with fluffy roasties and proper gravy – it's become a real highlight for weekend get-togethers.
-
There's always something on, like live music, quiz nights, or events for special occasions, making it a lively choice if you're after some entertainment without venturing too far.
-
The menu offers a nice variety of dishes, from pub classics to more adventurous bites like Korean chicken, and it's clear they've put effort into improving the food and service lately.
Cons
-
It can sometimes feel a bit bloke-heavy behind the bar, which might put off some folks looking for a more balanced atmosphere, especially if you're after a mixed crowd.
-
Space can be an issue with tables being scarce, particularly if it's busy or pre-booked, and there have been complaints about strong smells like fish overpowering the vibe.
-
The place has had reports of being chilly inside, even on a bad weather day, which isn't ideal when you're settling in for a drink or meal.
-
Dogs seem to be a regular sight, which might not suit everyone, especially if you're not keen on furry friends joining the fun.

One of my biggest questions about GPO is why aren’t there more women behind the bar. The refurbishment is great. That they are trying to get musical talent in is great. The food is good enough. But they are cultivating a bro atmosphere because there are simply not enough women employees or servers.
Realise that the reason you are getting gangs of youth trying to get in and drink too much is because you need to make GPO more friendly to women young and old
The trouble with this establishment is that it's mainly a restaurant and, as such, smelt incredibly strongly of fish. The tables, even just the ones for drinks, are scarce and then pre-booked by others.
I didn't quite understand why there were so many dogs in there? It's not that it's located anywhere near a park! The hounds were quite noisy, and there was at least one canine who looked like a banned breed.
The bar service was slow.
The toilets, accessed up a flight of stairs, were clean.
Have started going here a good bit for food and drinks of late and we are so pleased with the difference in a couple of years. I am under the impression the bar is under new management, in the past we have gone here the service and food had been below average at best. But now it’s all great. Friendly bar with great food. Like the fact it’s not a huge menu and what they offer is done right and fresh. Small criticisms are that maybe the pint of Guinness is a bit expensive and the smoking area could be made so much nicer. (actually out of Guinness at the moment but the replacement stout is really good). Bar area is recently done up and lovely atmosphere here and I highly recommend. Seats near the open fire are in high demand so get in early. Pet friendly.
The saying " a week is a long time in politics " could be rephrased as a year is a long time since my Wife & Myself had a decent meal & surroundings in this place.
It was a bad day weatherwise for a start, but the place was freezing 🥶
The GPO was all but empty at 1 0 clock, but sitting in this fridge of a building with no heat was no joke, the food was OK, but for what your paying you want a warm environment.
Im a disabled Pensioner, paying over 40 odd quid for 2 meals & drinks, we are entitled to eating with ( heating )
Won't go back again, until they wake their ideas up 🤔
Loving the recent refurbishment and more importantly the great sounding and tasting menu. The menu has a good variety of dishes (but not too big) which allows the kitchen to push out great tasting pub and bistro level food. The Korean chicken bites were delicious and I was very happy to see a bit of fusion on their menu. The fish and chips was flavoursome and fresh, definitely a lot better than other pubs in the area. The chicken schnitzel was crispy and cooked well but could have done with perhaps a bit more flavour in the breadcrumb to whack it up a notch. The sticky toffee pudding was the perfect (and filling) end to the meal, a definite winner. The service was great and the staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. Highly recommend and will definitely be coming back to try the Sunday roasts!
