About This Pub

Ah, the Black Horse – it's one of those pubs that feels like a proper community hub in Barnet, with its blend of old-school charm and a bit of modern flair that makes you want to settle in for the evening. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this friendly, lively atmosphere that's spot on for grabbing a pint or catching up with mates, and I love how they've involved the locals in picking their wines – it's those little touches that make it stand out. The drinks selection is bang on, with plenty of options to suit different tastes, and when the food's available, it sounds like the hearty classics hit the mark for a satisfying meal. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; the kitchen's shut for refurb at the moment, and some recent feedback highlights a few dodgy experiences, like meals that didn't quite live up to expectations or it being a bit too noisy for a relaxed chat. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.2, it's clear most people have a good time, and I'd say it's worth checking out once things are back up and running – just keep an eye on the updates if you're after a bite to eat.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is just lovely – it's got that perfect mix of traditional charm and a lively buzz, making it a great spot to unwind with friends.
  • The staff are really friendly and efficient; they go out of their way to make you feel welcome, like when they check if you'd prefer a bottled drink.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, including local wines chosen with community input, which adds a nice personal touch.
  • When the food's on point, it's spot on – think hearty pub classics that are well-presented and satisfying for a good meal out.
Cons
  • The kitchen's currently closed for refurbishment, so you might miss out on those tasty meals for now, which is a bit of a shame.
  • Some folks have had disappointing experiences with the food, like one review mentioning a lamb dish that was barely there – not ideal for a proper lunch.
  • It can get a tad noisy on busier days, especially if you're popping in for a quiet drink after work.
  • It's not the most child-friendly place, so if you're planning a family outing, you might want to think twice.

Food suited us for our visit, a good presentation of mixed platter, served by easy going but quick staff. I enjoyed the friendly vib in the place. A good mixture of clients.

Had Easter lunch in here .. absolutely awful. Ordered the lamb. Had to send it back it was literally a bone with one mouth full of meat. No child friendly options either. There was hardly any one in there .. this should have been a sign. We have had some lovely family meals in this pub over the years ..never ever again !

Stopped for a couple of drinks on the way home. Friday, late afternoon, was busy but a bit noisy. It's good to see a nice pub still pulling in the customers.

Good pub lunch after an exhausting week. Ella, our waitress was wonderful and really helpful. We had 3 Neck Oils on tap ( very good) and one coke- waitress asking whether I would prefer a bottle or off the pump was appreciated because I really like a bottled drink with no ice. Our order was fish and chips (chunky ones!), Cumberland sausage (3) with mash, gravy (slightly saltier than I expected) and peas which were done perfectly, the classic burger and buttermilk chicken burger with upgraded dirty fries. We were told at ordering that the dirty fries instead of the skinny ones with the burger would be an additional cost which we were happy to pay. Food arrived promptly enough. Waitresses were attentive without being intrusive. Relaxing time with the family. Good pub vibe. One downside was the smell in the passageway to the toilets although the toilets themselves were clean.
