Wardwick Tavern, 23 Wardwick, Derby DE1 1HA

About This Pub

Ah, Bess of Hardwick – or as some know it, the Wardwick Tavern – it's one of those places in Derby that really comes alive on a night out. I've got to say, the buzz in there is infectious; whether it's the fantastic outdoor setup with the big screen blasting tunes or the cosy back area perfect for chatting over a few pints, it just feels like a proper spot to unwind with friends. The drinks are fairly priced too, which is always a win when you're out for the evening. On the flip side, though, I've heard a fair few tales about the door staff being a bit heavy-handed – stories of being turned away for what seems like no good reason can really take the edge off an otherwise great night. It's got that no-nonsense, rough-around-the-edges charm, but if you're looking for something a bit more refined, it might not hit the mark. All in all, it's worth a visit if you're up for a lively pint, just go in with your eyes open and maybe plan ahead to avoid any hiccups.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely brilliant, especially with the big screen music outside – it's a real highlight for a night out in Derby.
  • Drinks are reasonably priced, making it a wallet-friendly spot to enjoy a pint or two with mates.
  • The music selection is spot on, and the back area is a cracking place to gather and have a laugh.
Cons
  • The door staff can be a bit rude and overly strict, sometimes turning folks away without a proper explanation, which puts a damper on things.
  • It has that rough and ready vibe, like a spit and sawdust pub, which might not appeal if you're after something more polished.
  • Prices are a tad above average, so you might end up spending more than expected for a round.

Terrible door staff on the weekends. No reason for no entry!

Turned away by rude doorman. Usual catchphrase... you've had too much to drink.. you can't come in. The three of us had one pint and a meal over the road then decided to have a pint in the Bess of Hardwick twenty feet away. The doorman must have some sort of special powers to be able to form an opinion in such a short time. The pub trade is on its knees and needs our support. Non of us will ever spend a penny in that pub and I'll tell my friends to do the same. We walked to the White horse... friendly and great music.

Bit rough and ready kind of a pub, spit and sawdust etc, Above average prices, but not bad, fairly decent music, staff ok, get served fairly quickly, not very popular inside, outside more so. It's not the best pub in derby, nor is it the worse. Average at best.
