About This Pub
Ah, The Woolpack in Chelmsford – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a second home, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews and their website, it's got this warm, community-driven spirit that's hard to beat. The beers are fantastic, with a solid range including craft options and cask ales, and the staff go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, which really adds to the charm. I love how they've got things like board games and a pool table for a bit of fun, plus the garden is a treat on nicer days, and it's even dog-friendly, so you can bring the whole family along. The food deals, like that steak night, are brilliant value and hit the spot for hearty pub grub without any fuss. On the flip side, it can get a tad rowdy occasionally with groups mucking about, though they sort it out quickly, and if you're in the mood for something more upscale, it might not quite fit the bill since it's all about that traditional feel. Still, with a solid 4.3 rating from folks who've been there, it's clear this place does a lot right for us pub lovers looking for good times without the pretence. If you're in Chelmsford, I'd say give it a go – it's a welcoming spot that balances fun and relaxation nicely.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The selection of beers and whiskies is absolutely brilliant – plenty of craft options and cask ales to choose from, making it a top spot for a proper pint.
-
The staff are so friendly and welcoming; they really make you feel at home, whether you're popping in for a quick drink or settling in for the evening.
-
It's got a cracking atmosphere, with live music, board games, and a real community vibe – perfect for catching up with mates or enjoying a laugh.
-
The food is spot on for pub grub; affordable deals like steak night and tasty options in the garden make it a great place for a bite without breaking the bank.
-
The outdoor area and beer garden are lovely, especially on a sunny day, and it's dog-friendly, which is a bonus if you're out with your furry friend.
Cons
-
It can get a bit lively at times with the odd group causing a fuss, though the team handles it well, it might not be ideal for a quiet night.
-
The menu sticks to traditional pub fare, so if you're after something more fancy or adventurous, you might find it a tad limited.
-
Opening hours seem straightforward, but with multiple listings, it could confuse first-timers – best to double-check before heading out.
-
While it's inexpensive overall, some might notice it's more of a local haunt, so it doesn't have the buzz of a city centre spot if that's what you're after.

Part of a dying breed - perfect example of a great British pub.
Great range of beers, good pub grub, nice garden, dog friendly, friendly and welcoming staff (I was seved by Kiki) and good atmosphere. Clearly hub of the local community.
Not been in here since I first moved to Chelmsford.
Guys behind the bar were great, place is nice and clean and the outside area is nice. There were a few young idiots messing around but they were dealt with well.
Great pub. Good selection of beers and a few nice whiskys. Friendly attentive staff. I particularly liked the selection of board games they keep 👌
An absolute gem of a pub that we found by accident after taking a wrong turn. We had checked out several nearby pubs which turned out to be offering ‘fine dining’. Which means £23 for fish and chips and they seat you before you can order a drink so everything goes on the tab and you feel obliged to tip like a restaurant. So after our wrong turn we found the next pub down the road and what a happy accident. A proper boozer with a great selection of beers - often you can’t find one decent IPA but the Woolpack had Neck Oil AND Level Head. Sophie’s Choice and not in a good way. But a proper boozer rarely has such an amazing selection of food. Apart from standard s like fish and ships they had shepherds’ pie, beef stew and also some of the more exotic pub food options such as ribs which are apparently massive. We got a chicken sharing platter of wings and tenders with a load of dips and some steak fries while we tried to decide what to order for maims, and there was so much food that we never went on to mains that we were so keen to try. All fresh and hot and served quickly. The landlady was very welcoming and busy running round doing everything. Icing on the cake was an unobtrusive classic 80s soundtrack. We will have to find an excuse for a return visit.. I bet Sunday lunch is amazing!
One of the best 'locals' in Chelsmford.
The inside has lots of comfortable seats, booths, tables etc. With a separate room that had a pool table.
The beer garden is wonderful and the food is top notch.
Would definitely recommend
