About This Pub

Ah, The Old Engine – it's one of those local gems that really pulls you in with its warm atmosphere and friendly faces, you know? From what I've gathered from the chats online, it's a proper spot for catching live sports or having a game of pool, and when the food hits the mark, it's brilliant value with tasty curries and fresh naans that leave you smiling. The staff sound like absolute stars, always up for a chat and making everyone feel welcome, which is just what you want on a relaxed evening out. But, and I say this as a mate giving straight advice, it's not all plain sailing – a couple of reviews mention some dodgy dishes, like cold chips or burnt bits that could spoil the fun, and it seems the kitchen's consistency isn't quite there yet. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.3, it's worth a punt if you're in the area, especially for the price; just maybe keep it light if you're after a reliable meal. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together, as long as you're up for that mix of highs and the odd low.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's got a lovely community vibe with things like pool tables, live sports, and even people playing bridge, which adds to the wholesome atmosphere.
  • The food can be spot on when it's good – think fresh, tasty Indian-inspired dishes like curries and naans at really competitive prices, offering great value for money.
  • It's an inexpensive spot, perfect for a casual night out without breaking the bank, and some reviews rave about the delicious meals and overall experience.
Cons
  • Food quality seems hit or miss; a few folks have had disappointing experiences with cold chips, burnt bread, or weird-tasting curries that didn't live up to expectations.
  • Recent reviews show a bit of inconsistency, with some meals coming out rubbery or not as fresh as hoped, which could put a damper on your visit.
  • There might not be much in the way of online presence, like no website, so it's harder to check menus or details in advance if you're planning ahead.

COLD CHIPS........ BURNT BREAD........ WEIRD TASTING TIKKA MASALA..... RUBBERY ROTI..... THIS PLACE WAS IN MY TOP THREE WORST EVER EVER CURRYS FACT. I have to say the food was very very disappointing in my honest opinion the chefs should go and eat some food at the red lion west brom or the coverd wagon or Jack's bar or the vine west brom etc etc etc......then maybe they would understand why the food they serve is not fit for purpose........

An old English pub with an Indian twist. Pool table, decent music playing, no frills but tidy, clean and the most delicious food. A shining example of what a desi grill can be. Chefs special curry (lamb, chicken and prawn), a chicken tikka filled naan bread, pilau rice (the nice one with all the coloured bits), nice portion of chips, garlic naan and a poppadom starter with all the sauces costs £27.50. That fed me and the missus leaving us barely able to get to the car and definitely sofa bound by the time we arrived home. Best Indian food I've had for a while. Comparable to the Vine in West From for quality of food but a cosier setting. Can't fault at all. Drinks price was low to average with a nice pint of Stella and a pint of lager shandy coming in at £7....not too shabby really considering a Stella can knock you back £7 on its own in some establishments! A perfect score for a great Indian gastro pub that could knock spots off many high end Indian restaurants for food quality 😋. Hope to see you again very soon...

Stopped by for a quick drink and was pleasantly surprised. The community atmosphere, with people playing bridge together, gave the place a very wholesome feel. The staff were fantastic, and one of the chefs even greeted us, despite us not eating. Enjoyed watching plenty of live sports, including the unexpected treat of test cricket. We will definitely be back to try the mixed grill!

Brilliant customer service and nice owners. We ordered the V10 mixed grill with naans and chilli chips. Everything was fresh and tasted good. Definitely recommend, especially the chicken lollipops 😃. Really good value for money!!!
