About This Pub
Ah, The Lamp Tavern – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away in Dudley with that unmistakable Black Country vibe. I've got to say, the beer here is a real highlight; Bathams Bitter is spot on, with a depth of flavour that'll have you coming back for more, and it's clear why it's built such a loyal following over the years. Pair that with the friendly staff who make you feel like you're chatting with old pals, and you've got a welcoming spot that's perfect for a relaxed pint or a bite of their simple but scrumptious grub, like those cheese and onion cobs that everyone's raving about. The atmosphere is pure nostalgia, with its steeped history and charming outdoor views that make for a lovely setting on a sunny day. But let's be honest, it's not without its downsides – the furniture's a tad worn and could do with a refresh, and there have been a few grumbles about service not always being on point, like when drinks don't quite hit the mark or staff seem a bit caught off guard. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for anyone after an authentic pub experience; just keep in mind it might not be the flashiest spot, but that's part of its enduring appeal if you're up for that genuine, no-frills charm.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer is absolutely spot on – Bathams Bitter is a real standout, with that perfect balance of flavour that's earned it a legendary status among beer enthusiasts.
-
The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in, which really adds to the cosy atmosphere.
-
It's got that classic, unchanged charm with a rich history, offering a nostalgic step back in time that you don't find everywhere these days.
-
The food hits the mark too, like those simple yet brilliant cheese and onion cobs that folks rave about – fresh, tasty, and just what you fancy with a pint.
-
There are lovely views from the outdoor seating, perfect for a relaxing afternoon or evening catch-up with mates.
Cons
-
The furniture can feel a bit outdated and worn, which might not suit everyone looking for a more modern spot, though it does add to the traditional feel for some.
-
Service can occasionally fall short, with a few tales of unprepared staff or the odd off pint that needs sorting, which is a shame in an otherwise solid pub.
-
There might be inconsistencies in drink quality now and then, like that vinegar-tasting shandy mentioned, so it's worth checking if something doesn't seem right.

This is a great pub stopped here a few years back was really nice the staff was very helpful need to pop in and have a pint🍺😁💯
Wonderful place. Everything was great. The furniture is a little outdated but that can be put right. I had a cheese and onion cob and it was the best ever tasted my life. I have just been released from a Secure Mental Health Unit and this is the place to go to. Well done to all the staff
Decor and atmosphere seemed unchanged over thirty years. Each and every pint impeccable, cheese and onion cob was simple and excellent (good, fresh cob; spicy onion; and thick slabs of mature cheddar).
Just played a gig here with my college and the staff were extremely unprepared and fed up. My dad got a pint of shandy that tasted like vinegar. When he took it back to the bar, they said it had gone off. The staff behind the bar were gonna charge him for a replacement drink before he reminded them that they had literally just served an out of date drink. The room we used for the gig was extremely cramped and not big enough for an event. We had a max capacity of 60 and only 30 showed up and it was still too busy and impossible to get to the mixing desk from the door.
The place is fabulous.
Many memories from there as I had some wonderful years playing football for them.
I went up there this afternoon after work for a quick beer.
The staff where very friendly and welcoming.
I then went outside to the seated area where you have some wonderful views of Dudley, Rowley and the surrounding area's.
Definitely recommend it for a few beers.
