About This Pub

Ah, The Horse & Groom in Braintree – it's one of those pubs that feels like a staple in the community, with a solid 4.1 rating from folks who've popped in. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the highlights are the staff who can be absolute gems, making you feel right at home with their cheerful service – I mean, hearing about Jon going out of his way to ensure a good time really warms you up to the place. It's also great that it's open every day from around 11 in the morning, giving you plenty of chances for a casual pint or a meet-up, and the food situation is pretty relaxed, letting you bring your own or grab something from a food truck if you're peckish. On the downside, though, it's not all rosy; some have had a rough experience with the venue feeling a bit neglected – think grubby surfaces and an off-putting smell that lingers, plus the toilets are in a bit of a mess, which isn't ideal for anyone. And don't even get me started on the car park; there are stories of unexpected fines or scams, so you'd want to read the signs carefully before settling in. All things considered, it's worth swinging by if you're local and in the mood for a no-frills pub crawl, but maybe keep your expectations in check and plan accordingly – it's got heart, but it could do with a freshen-up to really shine.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff can be really welcoming and attentive, like one chap who made sure everyone was having a great time – it's those little touches that make a pub feel like a proper local spot.
  • It's got that classic pub vibe, perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates, and being open seven days a week makes it dead convenient.
  • They're flexible with food; you can bring your own or wait for the food truck, which is a nice option if you're after something simple without the fuss.
Cons
  • The place can be a bit grubby and smelly in spots, which really takes away from the enjoyment – no one wants to deal with that on a night out.
  • Some of the bar team aren't the friendliest; a few have mentioned getting a chilly reception when they walked in, which isn't the best first impression.
  • There are issues with the car park that could catch you out, like hidden charges or scams, so it's worth keeping an eye out to avoid any headaches.
  • The facilities, especially the toilets, are in a right state – dirty and broken in places, which is a proper letdown for what should be a straightforward visit.

Dirty, grubby, smelly, the glass looked like it was from the 80s. Chilly reception from the bar staff, just stared at us when we walked in. Couldn't get out of there quick enough

*BEWARE OF THE CAR PARK* A nice local pub I only started to visit recently however i was totally scammed by the car parking system. Although clear signage is set out, I didn’t read it as i only stopped in for 1-2 hours at a time over the course of a few days you would think entering your registration may of just been a formality or you made the foolish choice of not reading the sign. As a paying customer I didn't think anything of it as I wasnt parked there for long. Overlooking entering my reg. This was a costly mistake and cost me over £200 in parking fines. Not the pubs fault but I would just like to thank Greene King for taking advantage of their customers with this establishment.

Used to eat and drink here before new owners the previous owner would be ashamed of the state of the place if I could post pictures of the disgusting state of the ladies loos I would. Don't think the toilets have been cleaned since before old owner, tap is not working properly the all step is broken and there is an inch of dust everywhere wall need wiping. Glad they don't do food anymore would hate to think what the kitchen would be like.😕
