About This Pub

Ah, Hogarths in South Shields – it's one of those places that really captures the spirit of a traditional pub with a twist, doesn't it? Picture yourself stepping into this grand Victorian gin palace on Mile End Road; it's got that charming, old-school vibe with chandeliers twinkling overhead, making you feel right at home for a relaxed evening. The real star here is their incredible range of gins – over 120 varieties, all served up with thoughtful garnishes that enhance every sip, which is just perfect if you're a gin enthusiast like me. The staff are genuinely friendly, and the atmosphere buzzes with good energy, whether you're popping in for a daytime drink or settling in for the night to catch some live sport on their numerous TVs. Prices are fair too, so it's easy to enjoy without worrying about the tab. On the flip side, though, I've heard a couple of tales about a rather strict dress code that might leave you feeling a bit miffed if you're not dressed to their liking – it's a shame when that happens, as it can sour an otherwise great visit. And if you're thinking of grabbing a bite, well, the food might not always hit the mark; one person mentioned underwhelming starters with odd portions, so perhaps it's best to stick to the drinks menu. All in all, it's a solid spot for a fun night out, but going in with realistic expectations will make for the best experience – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, and you'll likely have a whale of a time!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The gin selection is absolutely brilliant – over 120 brands to choose from, all served perfectly with great garnishes to bring out the flavours.
  • It's got a really welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff, making it a great spot for a casual catch-up with mates.
  • Drinks are reasonably priced, so you won't break the bank while enjoying a pint or a gin.
  • Plenty of seating options, including cosy private booths for a more intimate vibe, and spacious areas for watching the big games on their many flat-screen TVs.
  • The grand Victorian style with chandeliers gives it a lovely, classic feel that's perfect for a night out in South Shields.
Cons
  • There might be a strict dress code in place, which could put some folks off if they're turned away for something like wearing tracksuits.
  • Food quality seems hit or miss; one experience mentioned tasteless starters and skimpy portions, so it might not be the best choice if you're after a proper meal.
  • While it's generally buzzing, a few comments suggest service could feel inconsistent at times, which might dampen the experience on busier nights.

Had the mozzarella & salmon Starter which was tasteless and poor. Far too much mozzarella on the plate and the tiniest amount of salmon plopped on top of parma ham, which was weird! On to the Main course and I chose the mixed grill hanging skewers....lovely I thought very little meat on both as what the the restaurant do is put more tomatoes & peppers and chunks of lemon on the skewers to make up for the lack of meat. I actually put a whole piece of lemon into my mouth thinking it was chicken!! Now I paid £26.90 for the 2 courses and feel a bit cheated if I'm being honest...I was still hungry when I left!! Overall very disappointed as had been about a year or so ago and enjoyed it then but seems to have gone down hill. There are better restaurants in South Shields to visit imo.
